Vedanta
Academy is a values based, affordable, academic Grade
3 to Grade 12 school which in addition to concentration
on ACTIVE Learning, Reading and Study skills, focuses
on the entire child including learning to be a good to
themselves and to the people and world around them. We work with children of average or above average intelligence with learning differences that might find it difficult to find success in traditional systems. That
is why we have the "STRIVE"
Program through our school and curriculum where
we model the program and then constantly ask students
" How well did you STRIVE today"

Vedanta
Academy started in 1999 as a school helping children of
average to above average intelligence, with learning differences,
to realize success and a love of learning. We know that
children learn differently and while some learn very well
in conventional lecture, homework and repetition learning
systems, others do not. Yet they are every bit as intelligent.
There are a number of labels applied to various systems
and various learners but at the end of the day it boils
down to what learning environment is a fit for the variety
of learners. It is important for you to find your
fit.
We
are one of a number of Independent School learning opportunities
in the Central Okanagan and all of us have our "student
fits". At Vedanta Academy we provide an active learning
environment focusing on active reading skills, active
study skills, active note taking and active learning strategies.
We also teach and reinforce organizational skills. Students
acquire the needed tools essential to their learning style,
which grows their academic achievement. Student growth
in learning improves self esteem as they can gain their
rightful place as effective learners and leaders.
We
celebrate differences at Vedanta Academy which includes
learning differences, cultural differences and social
differences. We operate in a non religious format incorporating
core human principles as outlined in the STRIVE Program.
Discipline is a restorative justice model where students
discuss and settle their conflicts in a rational and mediated
atmosphere, working toward a goal of making things right.
We
are a school of first choice where students want to attend
and do so with pride and enthusiasm. We foster an environment
where students are free to exchange ideas and thoughts.
Critical thinking skills are nurtured and students are
encouraged to make choices understanding results of their
choices, both good and bad.
What
our students say they like about Vedanta Academy
"I
like the safe environment" ........."I like
how I get help when I ask for it"........ I like
how the halls are filled with posters and artwork"........."I
like the humour in class".......I like the one on
one time with the teachers"......"I like the
small classes"......."I like that the school
does lots of different events"
As
for our staff....
We
have a dedicated team of learning experts who in addition
to teaching credentials also bring a variety of personal
traits and unique skills to the Academy. Many have professional
knowledge and skills in other areas such as art, music,
performance, media, business, criminology, personal development,
sports etc. Our employees are proud to work here and give
freely of themselves to make this the best education environment
they can.
In
addition to professional skills they bring to Vedanta,
our teaching staff undergo constant professional development
bringing new and exceptional teaching and learning strategies
to the classroom. The professional growth has been enormous
and continues to grow. Our professional days include specialty
training and then several days of mentoring in the classroom
by the training professionals. All of the training aimed
toward bringing an active learning environment to vedanta
students at all levels.
What
is an Independent School in British Columbia?
Vedanta
Academy is an accredited Group 1 B.C. Independent School
and as such offers certain services to you our clients
as well as having certain responsibilities and Ministry
inspections. All independent schools offer something different
than mainstream education in order that they can claim
independent status. It is important that when you are
shopping for your independent school to understand what
each group offers. The table below is supplied for your
comparisons.
Requirements
for Schools
(Group 1,2,3 & 4)
The
Ministry requires all independent schools to hold a certificate
of group classification. The requirements for each group
are shown in the chart, taken from the B.C. Guide for
Independent Schools, a publication of the Independent
Schools office of the Ministry of Education Skills and
Training.
